The Politics of Rehearsal accompanies the first large-scale American museum exhibit on Francis Alys, a highly acclaimed contemporary artist. The book’s focus is Alys‘ Rehearsal (Ensayo) series, including works like Ensayo 1, 1999-2000, where a red Volkswagen Beetle struggles to ascend a hill in Tijuana, synchronized with a Mexican danzón rehearsal. Ensayo 2, 2005 features a dancer practicing a striptease, and Ensayo 3 will be produced for the exhibition. Other included works are When Faith Moves Mountains and Song for Lupita, alongside paintings, photographs, and drawings. This publication includes an in-depth essay by Russell Ferguson, exploring Alys‘ focus on the theme of rehearsal.
